Paying the Mortgage

Pain demands to be felt.
It will not wait for you to pry open the blinds.
To check the window.
To open the door.
It will barge into the house as if it owns it.
It has been there before, many times, whether you choose to acknowledge its visits and stays, or not.
It will rummage through your fridge.
Toss up your living room.
Write all over your fabrics.
And once it has finally marked your home as its own, you will not make any move to evict it.
You will thrash, restless in its unmade bed.
You will eat off its dirty plates.
Lay on its dead lawn.
And again you will do nothing about it.
Your money will burn through.
Your bills will go unpaid.
Your power and water will be cut off.
Then, having tormented you enough, the pain will disappear.
And you will be alone in the dark.
In a home so filthy that the layout is now unfamiliar.
Objects in such states of disrepair that you cannot remember if they were ever really yours.
You will be left to either clean up what might remain or start a new without being told how.
Just do not forget, pain is an impatient and often recurring visitor.
